Renewable Energy Sharing

Remote individual self-consumption is a Self-Consumption Configuration for Renewable Energy Sharing that enables a single end customer to virtually share the energy generated by one or more renewable energy installations. The energy can be used to cover the consumption of multiple points of delivery registered to the same entity, even if they are located at different sites. The generation plants and consumption points must comply with the technical and geographical requirements established by current legislation.

Like Renewable Energy Communities (RECs), individual remote self-consumption schemes originated at the European level and have been transposed and implemented in Italy through specific legislative measures, including the most significant one, the “Self-Consumption Configuration for Renewable Energy Sharing Decree and Integrated Framework for Distributed Self-Consumption – Operating Rules for Access to the Distributed Self-Consumption Service and the NRRP Grant“.
Within this regulatory framework, TerrAria has supported the following organisations:

Individual Remote Self-Consumption for Donelli Alexo

The company, specialising in industrial coatings, operates two separate facilities in Lombardy: the office building (the company’s historic headquarters), located within the Ticino Park, and a second building consisting of an industrial production facility located outside the Regional Park.
To install a photovoltaic system capable of reducing its electricity consumption while also lowering emissions from production activities, the company decided to dedicate the entire roof of the production building to the installation of a photovoltaic system with a capacity of approximately 300 kW. The system was connected to the Points of Delivery (PODs) of both the production building and the office building. This solution maximises the available roof area in order to cover as much as possible of the overall electricity demand of both facilities.

The Agricultural Industrial Zone Consortium of Verona is a public economic body and one of the leading industrial and economic hubs in the Veneto Region. In addition to preparing Operational Guidelines for the development of Self-Consumption Configurations for Renewable Energy Sharing within the industrial district, TerrAria developed a preliminary feasibility scenario for the implementation of a remote individual self-consumption scheme serving the Palazzo Direzionale, a building primarily occupied by offices.
The building consists of seven above-ground floors and one basement level and features a flat roof designated for the installation of a photovoltaic system. The analysis also took into account the ongoing modifications to the building’s internal plant systems.

Remote Individual Self-Consumption for the City of Cremona

The City of Cremona signed an agreement with the Municipal Electricity Company (AEM), which built and manages a photovoltaic system with a capacity exceeding 700 kW. The electricity generated by the system is entirely allocated to 55 municipal electricity users belonging to the City of Cremona.

THE ROLE OF TERRARIA

TerrAria supports Public Administrations and private organisations in promoting the various incentivised Self-Consumption Configurations for Renewable Energy Sharing by organising technical working groups involving the relevant stakeholders for each configuration.

More specifically, when developing a remote individual self-consumption scheme, TerrAria analyses the energy consumption of public buildings and prepares a feasibility study for the installation of photovoltaic systems on public building rooftops. Where a new photovoltaic system is planned (if not already foreseen), an energy balance is developed.

The analysis includes calculating both the shared energy (the hourly minimum between electricity production, net of direct self-consumption, and the consumption of the Points of Delivery included in the individual remote self-consumption scheme) and the energy exported to the grid. This assessment is carried out by overlapping the hourly production and consumption profiles.

TerrAria also supports the members of the Self-Consumption Configurations for Renewable Energy Sharing in registering on the Energy Services Manager portal in order to obtain the available incentives in accordance with the current legislation.
Finally, TerrAria also assists residential condominium communities in assessing the feasibility and potential benefits of establishing Collective Self-Consumption schemes through dedicated meetings with condominium property managers.
