Energy Audit pursuant to Legislative Decree 102/2014 for Milano Ristorazione S.p.A.
Milano Ristorazione S.p.A., a company owned by the Municipality of Milan, established in July 2000 and operational since 1 January 2001, specialises in collective catering services and falls within the scope of companies subject to the obligations set out in Legislative Decree 102/2014 concerning energy audits.
As a multi-site company, it is required to carry out energy audits on a number of sites proportionate and sufficiently representative to provide an accurate overview of the company’s overall energy performance and to reliably identify the most significant improvement opportunities and priority energy retrofitting measures. A multi-site company must therefore list all its sites, including their annual consumption, and select specific sites on which to conduct the energy audit according to a defined clustering plan, adequately justifying the choices made in order to ensure representativeness. For Milano Ristorazione, 5 significant sites were identified, and an energy audit was carried out for each of them.
On 19 July 2014, Legislative Decree 102/2014 entered into force, introducing the obligation for large enterprises and energy-intensive companies to carry out an energy audit every 4 years. An energy audit assesses the energy status and energy performance of a production company, identifying technically feasible and economically viable measures to improve efficiency and support energy retrofitting pathways. It is based on: preliminary data collection (activities, processes, consumption by energy carrier, plant mapping), division into functional areas and consumption analysis through energy models (electrical and thermal).
The models estimate specific consumption based on equipment power ratings and usage profiles, calibrated against real data, in order to propose efficiency measures with estimated savings, costs and payback periods. An energy audit carried out within a production company aims to define the company’s baseline energy performance and identify energy retrofitting measures to be promoted in order to increase energy efficiency, with particular attention to measures that are both technically feasible and economically advantageous.
Milano Ristorazione primarily provides school catering services for nurseries, public kindergartens, primary schools and lower secondary schools. It also extends its services to the socio-healthcare sector, supplying meals to Residential Care Homes (RSA), home-delivered meals for the elderly, Integrated Day Care Centres (CDI), Day Care Centres for People with Disabilities (CDD), as well as facilities such as night shelters, Civil Protection, the City Council, affiliated private schools and holiday homes. The company serves thousands of meals daily, supporting educational and care communities in the Lombardy regional capital.
THE ROLE OF TERRARIA
TerrAria, with over ten years of experience in energy efficiency and energy management, prepares Energy Audits for production companies across all phases, starting from preliminary analyses, definition of the audit scope, clustering and data collection. This is followed by on-site inspections at the audited sites, consumption analysis, development of energy models, calculation of energy performance indicators, estimation of measures and preparation of the final audit report.
Specifically, in the case of Milano Ristorazione, the energy audits conducted on the 5 sites identified through clustering enabled the calculation of energy performance indicators for both electricity and natural gas on a monthly basis, assessing site efficiency in terms of meals produced relative to recorded consumption. In addition, it was possible to identify and recommend specific efficiency measures to Milano Ristorazione in order to improve performance and reduce energy consumption at the analysed sites, including enhancement of the monitoring system, relamping, installation or expansion of photovoltaic systems, and replacement of chillers and other HVAC systems.
