ISO 50001 for Arditi S.p.A.

ISO 50001 Certification for Arditi S.p.A.

Arditi S.p.A. is a leading Italian company in the production of lighting components, headquartered in Val Brembilla (BG). Founded in 1960, it operates in the electronics sector for lighting technology.

TerrAria supported Arditi S.p.A. throughout the process of obtaining ISO 50001 certification for its Energy Management System (EnMS), achieved in compliance with the international standard adopted in Italy as UNI CEI EN ISO 50001:2018. The company is committed to pursuing rational energy use and continuous improvement of energy efficiency in its production activities through systematic analysis of energy consumption and the implementation of targeted measures aimed at optimising energy use, without compromising quality objectives and environmental sustainability policies defined under related standards (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 28000).

ISO 50001 is a voluntary international standard for Energy Management Systems (EnMS), adopted in Italy as UNI CEI EN ISO 50001. It originates from the European regulatory framework established by Directive 2012/27/EU on energy efficiency, which requires periodic energy audits for large enterprises and energy-intensive companies, granting exemption where ISO 50001 certification is in place, provided it includes equivalent energy audits.

For an industrial manufacturing company, certification represents a systematic approach to continuously improving energy performance, reducing consumption, costs and environmental impacts, and promoting optimisation of energy use by integrating energy management into daily processes, without setting predefined performance targets.

The certification pathway is structured into progressive and integrated phases. It begins with an initial audit to assess the company context, energy maturity and compliance with requirements. This is followed by implementation of the Energy Management System (EnMS), including development of documentation, definition of the energy policy, energy review and staff training, typically over a period of 6–12 months. Subsequently, internal verification and management review are conducted to test the effectiveness of the system and approve its strategic direction. The certification phase involves stage-one and stage-two audits carried out by an accredited certification body, culminating in the issuance of the certificate.

The core activities of Arditi S.p.A. focus on the design, production and global marketing of a wide range of products, including lampholders for incandescent and halogen lamps, electrical cables, plugs and switches for domestic use, wiring systems for lamp power supply with plug and switch, suspensions, power supplies, dimmers, controllers and electronic components for LED technology. The company provides innovative solutions for retail, design, industrial and public sectors, including LED modules, transformers, electronic ballasts and advanced Bluetooth controllers for home automation systems. It also integrates third-party assembly services, offering plastic moulding, electronic board assembly, final packaging and supply of finished products ready for sale.

ISO 50001 certification therefore translates into a concrete commitment to optimising energy consumption in the company’s production processes, such as plastic moulding, electronic assembly and logistics.

THE ROLE OF TERRARIA

TerrAria, with over ten years of experience in energy efficiency and energy management, supported the company throughout the ISO 50001 certification process. TerrAria’s activities include initial analysis of the company’s energy and production context, definition of the management system scope, mapping of production lines and related machinery, analysis of energy consumption and creation of a reliable baseline. TerrAria also supports the company in monitoring energy consumption through the development or maintenance of a production monitoring system. An energy model is then developed and, following calibration, energy performance indicators (EnPIs) are defined and compared in relation to significant energy uses.

In the case of Arditi S.p.A., the implementation of the EnMS and support throughout the ISO 50001 certification process has been ongoing since 2018 and has led to significant energy and economic savings, through targeted interventions in response to anomalous consumption patterns or the need for technological upgrades on production lines.
